I was quiet during the month of June due to the job searching process. With the job search over, I'll be able to finish several projects near and dear to my heart before relocating to Chicago in August. Updates, source code uploads, and more announcements are scheduled for Monday. Thanks for continuing to read this blog, and for contributing your insights and advice.
I've joined a somewhat non-traditional company... it's not a design agency, software company, games studio, entertainment company, or any kind of IT consultancy. Nonetheless, we'll have the opportunity to build collaborative environments and architect a non-linear, interactive multimedia delivery system. We'll work for a unique audience on a challenging scale, with serious usability implications and a sweet, sweet development cycle. Curious? Tune in Monday :)

That sounds awesome -- I truly wish you the best of luck -- let us know how it goes!
could you repost your Movable Type XML template to your site? the link doesn't work currently and I would love to get my Movable Type / Flash news system up with your template's help! Thanks so much...
Posted by: nathan at June 29, 2002 03:01 AMThanks Steve and Allen! :)
Nathan, sorry about the missing template, I've created a new external path for the template on my account, it should be available as a separate file now. Go to http://63.144.246.231/information/archives/000063.html again, and right-click on the link to save the template to disk.

Hi Sam, I've been following you and learning a ton from you all this time. Your stuff is always awesome.
Just wanted to thank you for everything you've done for the flash community, and wish you the best of lucks in your new job!
...and yeah, we've missed you a lot in Flashcoders :)
all the best for you.
he he
A 'to-do' list on your 'to-do' list. :) I can't wait to take a look at some of the ideas you have in mind for that application. Have you had the chance to put together some ideas or a design brief about that 'to-do' list?
I was playing around with the idea of putting together a flight managment tool. I travel quite a bit, and I know of people who coordinate flight pickup/dropoffs, and it would be awesome to create a PocketPC App in Flash that allows you to enter flight data, update it (late arrivals, flight changes, etc.), view airport maps, locate gates/baggage claims, mark off successful arrivals, and on and on. Something along the lines of Eric D's FF2k2 NYC Event Guide (http://www.ericd.net/guide/).
Posted by: michael e. gunn at June 29, 2002 11:12 AMsam- thanks so much for reposting the XML template - I was able to work it into my site wonderfully! - the next step will be to try to find ways of enabling the other great features of MT like the Comments and embedded images to make it a full blog flash conversion! I eagerly await your return to the project and look forward to seeing what you are able to accomplish with it! Many MT & Flash fans will thank you!
Posted by: nathan at June 30, 2002 04:00 PMhave run into only one snag so far that I am stumped on how to accomplish... I created multiple authors for my blog (myself as the admin user, and then 5 other users with bascially just posting rights) - the blog displays perfect as long as they are posts that "I" make as the admin but if they post anything then you can't see anything at all - mine or theirs... not sure what might need to change to show this... perhaps show the actual post rather than the excerpt? let me know if you have any ideas I really appreciate it...
Posted by: nathan at June 30, 2002 11:25 PMwell I found the source of the problem - using "double quotes" in a title causes the whole display to malfunction... they work fine in the actual body of the message... just not the titles... single quotes also work just fine, in either place... don't know specifically what might be happening in the code when it sees those double quotes, but thought I would bring it to your attention as it was racking my brain! all the best....
Posted by: nathan at July 1, 2002 12:38 AMNathan, sorry about that, I just realized that the error comes from a design flaw in the XML template. You'll notice that the XML uses many attributes rather than nodes, because attributes are easier and faster to parse. However, a title cannot include double quotes because the title is stored as an XML node attribute, which doesn't allow double quotes or other special characters. A good XML design would have considered the possibility of title double quotes. I should probably redesign the XML template to use more text nodes with CDATA tags. Maybe a project for later.
