I bought Brian Bagnall's book, "Core Lego Mindstorms Programming" at the Borders bookstore a few blocks down the street. Following the instructions in the book, I over-wrote the RCX firmware on the MindStorms brick with the latest leJos Java operating system. I compiled and uploaded a simple java program through the IR port (command-line, sigh).
Started tapping the bumper sensor of my rover, and lo and behold, the LCD panel starts displaying an incrementing integer for each tap on the sensor. Wow. On to phase 4...
Note: References to buttons, motors, and sensors must go through global static class variables in leJos. The device is straightforward and simple, so static references save memory, according to the book.

Posted by: steve at May 11, 2002 01:59 AMI'm running on a windows 2000 laptop, and haven't had any problems so far except for having to re-install the drivers every time I go into suspend mode. W2k makes it even easier to set the classpath and path for your lejos compiler and java package paths! Even the Core Mindstorms Programming book provides installation instructions for w2k.
If you've got the Lego Mindstorms RIS 2.0 (or don't mind spending 200 bucks
at your local hobby store), you can download the lejos firmware, which is a
small jvm that runs on the RCX brick. Lejos supports a package based on
java.io and java.net, called josx.rcxcomm, but I've had a lot of trouble
with the package.
I would recommend the rcxdirect.jar package instead, which is part of the
RCXTools_1_4 toolset. You just download the host java application into the
robot, and use the rcxdirect API to send commands. Due to memory
limitations, it's quite difficult to extend the host application with any
behavioral programming, so all the logic must be on the PC if you use
RCXTools..
All of these things run on top of LeJOS, and they're all available at
sourceforge (just run a google search). There's a pretty good book called
"Core Lego Programming" by one of the Lejos founders, but again, I've run
into a lot of problems with their rcxcomm package and recommend RCXTools
instead. The RCXComm package might work better if you're on a linux platform
or if you're working in a cygwin environment on windows.
If you're more inclined towards C, there's a faster and smaller library
written for the RCX, called NQC ("not quite C").
