Flash-based Blog: Read Me!

This entry provides background information for all the folks who are visiting from Chris MacGregor's website, Flazoom. For those who don't know the whole story, I created a Flash MX interface to the movable type weblog, available at www.samuelwan.com/mainmenu.swf. It takes advantage of the fact that you can create templates in Movable Type to generate XML feeds, such as the RSS specification. Actually, the prototype was built as a proof of concept during one afternoon, and I hadn't intended on making it publicly available until I had time to build a complete interface to Movable Type, including an XML-RPC administration panel and public comments.

The prototype you see here doesn't accomodate public comments, and I haven't done any usability testing to streamline the navigation. So, if you'd like to see the REAL website and post comments, you should visit http://www.samuelwan.com/information. In the meantime, thanks to Flazoom for the link! I'll post a notice when I build the real Movable Type interface this summer... for now, must focus on finishing graduate school.

By the way, did I mention that you can download the source code here? You can use the source code if you can't wait to play with the final build, but like I mentioned, it's really just a prototype... source code for the final, complete system should be available this summer.

If you decide to install Movable Type on your system and you find it useful, consider donating some money to its creators for maintaining free software :) Please note that I'm not involved with the movable type software, and that the Flash source code is not part of the movable type system.

Best Regards,
Sam

Excellent job Sam. Is there any possibility of seeing your actual xml moveable type template for the flash news feed?

hey sam, thanks for the good work. you mention you're wanting to make a Flash interface for the *admin* parts of MT--why? I mean, I think it's a great idea to build more interesting interfaces into blog *content*, allowing visual ways of sifting through categories, viewing post history, or visualizing comment threads, but why the Admin interface?

It's just that it sounds like a "because you can"-type problem that isn't really a problem that needs solving at all.

(FYI for people who aren't using MT: the system has been wonderfully improved in the current version 2.0, and its excellent admin interface is the result of some quite extensive usability testing and interface refinement. It's probably one of the best pieces of donation-ware software I've seen.)

You're right, the more interesting aspects of this endeavor are the exploration of Flash as a navigation tool for dynamic content... how it can change the information retrieval cycle from state-less HTML to state-ful Flash UI. The Flash admin phase won't happen until after I finish the content display interfaces, and my main purpose in attempting the admin phase is to learn more about xml-rpc and its possibilities in Flash.

However, by the time I get around to that, there will be other Macromedia technologies available.

Why all the praise from me? all I have to say is, I'm very very pleased that I got the link to this site from the flashcoders list. I am also finishing a my final year of my BA in Digital Media Production, the title of my project : "An Investiagaion into the production of creating online web communites". The possibilities that Sam has shared with us is perfect in providing content to online communities. Sam, mate once again.....thanks.(just hope i get my degree now)

Hey, thanks! I'm really enthusiastic about the potential of Flash components to help us spend more time on building interfaces, and less time on building interface widgets. Once you weave components together into a complete application, the potential of Flash MX becomes very clear!

Sure, check out that URL for the template, you might have to view-source.

Hey, I tried to experiment a bit with MX components and I learned that if you use a mask over a layer that contains a UI component, the text in the component won't show. Ideas?

Samuel, i've encountered a problem i can't get around - i want to spawn new windows for links to websites outside the weblog or to view popup images in blog entries but i can't work out how to change the code! any ideas? i know your very busy, thanks!

Posted by: neil clavin at June 2, 2003 04:46 PM

Sam, it looks like you're loading in _all_ your MT entries in XML when the page loads initially. Is that right? Isn't that a bad idea if you continue to make more and more posts as time goes on?

I'm trying to figure out a way to load in a specific entry as it's requested by a user to speed up my initial load time...

Look forward to seeing this final source code to the MT System! It sure is hot here this summer :).
