Mike Chambers posted news on Flashcoders about a new Macromedia technote: local connections. I don't know much about local connections, and don't see much use for them, aside from providing a novelty effect in getting browser windows to communicate. Perhaps it'll become useful in some way with the upcoming Macromedia technologies... I'm not sure...?

Posted by samuel at April 7, 2002 05:22 PMlocalConnection is extremely useful. a couple of examples:
Website featuring seperate navigation menu and internal flash part in two different frames. Getting the Nav to talk to the Main parts is relatively easy with Javascript, but it will Not work on a Mac - which doesn't support FSCommand. localConnection saves the day there!! (Almost - apart from a F6 bug with named frame Anchors in Browser frames!!)
Example 2: A movie that when run on it's own does very little, but when another different movie (designed for the purpose) is run the first gets data from it. Using this method the first movie can be configured at run-time to do different things based on varying data from a second movie. A sort of Plug-in technology!! Very useful in Teaching methods ;)
There are probably hundreds of other uses that people will come up with once they learn the syntax and think of a need.
Just my 2 Euro's.
